Discover Japan’s Southern Spirit.

I chose Kyushu and Okinawa for this hosted journey because, during my most recent visit, I was reminded how remarkably layered and undiscovered Southern Japan still feels even to many Japanese travelers themselves.

This uniquely curated journey through Kyushu and Okinawa invites travelers to discover a centuries-old cultural exchange, exceptional cuisine, volcanic landscapes, hot spring traditions, and island spirit.

The journey starts in Okinawa Island, where turquoise waters, subtropical landscapes, and gentle ocean breezes welcome us into a slower rhythm of life. While staying at a beautiful beachside resort, we will explore the unique culture and history of Okinawa; the legacy of Ryukyu Kingdom, local artistry, and island traditions.

From Okinawa, we continue to Fukuoka. This historic port town has rich culinary traditions that reveal a fascinating side of Japan often overlooked by international travelers. Along the historic Kanmon Strait with samurai history and maritime trade, we’ll uncover the importance of the strait.

The journey then winds through the onsen towns of Yufuin or Beppu, where steam rises gently from the earth beneath peaceful mountain landscapes. Here, we’ll experience ryokan culture and restorative hot springs. It’s time to fully immerse in Japan’s timeless traditions.

Further south, Kagoshima reveals yet another captivating scenery of Kyushu through dramatic volcanic views, gardens with Southern flora and fauna, and sweeping views of Sakurajima, one of the active volcanoes in Japan rising powerfully across Kagoshima Bay.

Accommodations are hand-selected to reflect the unique character, atmosphere, and spirit of each region. The journey includes regional dining experience, cultural and historical exploration. Enjoy this seamless trip alongside Kay Fahlberg of Ippo Travel, sharing personal insights, stories, and discoveries beyond the familiar.
